My own experiences with masticating juicers
Okay I admit it, I have been what you might call a bit of a juicing addict for the past decade and a half! However, you do have to admit that as far as addictions go, mine is about as healthy an addiction that you can get. One thing I have learned in that time, is that if you want the best quality juice, you should be using a masticating juicer rather than any other type. Why? because the slower ‘chewing’ like process leads to more juice yield and protects all of the valuable nutrients and vitamins which would otherwise be destroyed in centrifugal juicers. Additionally, the juice is fresher and can be kept for up to 72 hours in the fridge and I personally find them easier to clean.
So anyway, I thought I would share my own experiences with masticating juicers and let you know which i feel are the best masticating juicers I’ve used throughout my lifetime. I have limited this to just three as I am sure you would not want to read for hours on end as I describe each and every one I have owned or tested.
The Omega J Series J8003, J8004, J8005, and J8006
I have had every single one of these at some point but and have gifted them to different family members as I have upgraded each time. I have stuck with the J8006 though as it is definitely the best of the lot. This is not to say that the rest are not excellent masticating juicers, they are all fantastic in fact, but the J8006 in my view is the complete package and the one right at the pinnacle of this series.
I would say that as a complete package the Omega J8006 one of the best masticating juicers that I’ve used and probably the very best. There are a couple that I might admit perform a little better at juicing but they are normally a lot more expensive, do not offer a great 15 year warranty like Omega does, and are not as easy to clean.
The auger in this model runs at an ideal 80 RPMs which means that the juice you get does not oxidize and the nutrients and vitamins are perfectly intact due to very little heat being generated when juicing. This slow juicing makes it ideal for denser foods that centrifugal juicers may struggle with and it also means that you will extract more juice from anything that you place inside it.
What I like most about the Omega J range is the fact that it can be used for other purposes other than just being a juicer. Its versatility allows it to make things like nut butters, baby food, and even frozen fruit sorbets. For a complete package I would definitely have the J006 at the very top when it comes to the best masticating juicers I’ve used.
Champion 2000 Commercial Juicer
The Champion 2000 was the first juicer I ever bought and is the reason my juicing addiction was able to grow into what it is today. As a newbie I guess I got very lucky with my first choice, as boy did I love that machine! I guess it speaks volumes that this juicer (which has been available for decades) is still regarded as one of the top masticating juicers after so many years. What you get with this model is an excellent yield of juice that is produced quite quickly compared to others, its extremely easy to clean, and is built to last.
I have kept this one as backup for my Omega J8006 though I doubt I will ever need to use it again. More than that I guess I have kept it for sentimental reasons rather than selling it or giving it away to family members as it was my first love.
It retails at about the same price as the J8006 and while it is great for juicing, it does not quite have the versatility as its replacement in my kitchen. What I would say about this model is that the quality of build just about edges out the J8006 if the aesthetics of it does not quite match. There are reports of this juicer still going well from customers who have had them for 20+ years.
Green Star GS-1000
Another very good masticating juicer on the market is that of the Green Star GS-1000. I admit that I have not had as much experience with this one as with the other two I have mentioned. Work commitments meant that I had to temporarily relocate for a few months and rather stupidly forgot to bring my then Champion juicer. Rather than getting it shipped to me I decided to use it as an opportunity to test another one and went for the Green Star.
Thankfully, I made another good choice as it served me very well. It is a bit cheaper than the two above as I obviously did not want to blow too much on something that was probably only going to be temporary. For that reason I expected it to not be as good but to be honest I was shocked that it pretty much matched the Champion in quality of juice and was actually a bit more effective at getting through tougher vegetables than my machine at home.
There have been complaints about the amount of cleaning needed for this model but I have always said that once you get used to it, it really is not so bad. Yes, it might be a shock to the system the first time around but once you get into a routine and sort out the process, you can have it done quite quickly. The amount of additional work compared to other masticating juicers is simply down to this one having more parts that need to be removed, cleaned, and then put back.
Personally, it was the 5 year warranty and the lower quality build that puts it as my third favorite rather than any higher. Sure, its cheaper and does what it does very well, its just that I prefer my appliances to look and feel more durable. I would certainly recommend this to people who are looking to get into juicing for the first time and will not be overworking it.
Well there you have it, my top 3 list of the best masticating juicers I’ve used. I have been juicing for some considerable time now and have had the opportunity to use and test out many others from time to time but the three above hold a place in my heart for different reasons. I do hope that I have helped at least some of you in forming an informed opinion on which masticating juicers would be the best to purchase.
